The following elected officials, organizations, and community leaders support councilmember Madison Nguyen and are opposed to the recall effort against her.

OPEN LETTER FROM A GROUP OF YOUNG VIETNAMESE PROFESSIONALS OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA

We, the undersigned, together with other groups, hereby voice our opinions regarding the naming of a business district on Story Road .. This is an ongoing issue that continues to divide the Vietnamese community. As young professionals who work in various sectors in northern California , the followings are the declaration of our voice:

The name Little Saigon, Saigon Business District,Vietnam Town or Saigon Town , are all wonderful names
with special meanings for different people. In existence are Japantown, Chinatown, Koreatown, the
Vietnamese community should also have our first Vietnam Town.

Various tactics such as intimidation and verbal abuse of individuals, organizations and public officials who
have opposing viewpoints than that of Little Saigon proponents have damaged the image of the Vietnamese
community both within our own community as well as in the City of San Jose. As the usage of these tactics
continues, we will see the downturn of our political presence and the opportunity for young Vietnamese
candidates to get involved in local politics will become more difficult and challenging.

Madison Nguyen is a young council member who has contributed greatly not only to her council District,
but also to the entire City of San Jose . Representing District 7, she has implemented many wonderful
projects such as improving and widening streets, developed more than 700 affordable housing projects,
constructed several neighborhood parks, and improved the economic vitality of her district by supporting
economic developing projects such as The Plant, which is largest retail shopping plaza in the City of San
Jose. In addition to these projects, Madison has a relentless commitment to the Vietnamese community.
Under her leadership, our community will welcome the first Vietnamese American Community Center in 2009,
witness the completion of Phase I of the Vietnamese Heritage Garden and many other projects that will
benefit our community. Before Madison became a council member, the City of San Jose never had an official
Vietnamese Retail Area, which the City Council has approved the name "Saigon Business District" as the
official name for this retail area. Because of the ongoing controversy, the name " Saigon " was
eliminated. After 1975, the Communist government took Saigon from us and now we lost Saigon Business District because of the ongoing struggles within our
community.

Growing up in a poor family with a humble background, Madison Nguyen is the first Vietnamese woman elected
to public office in California . She is a role model for the young generation and she represents the voice of young Vietnamese Americans as well as Asian Americans.

The name "Little Saigon" has support from a group of people; however, it is not the only name that represents the Vietnamese community. Madison is an elected official who has a responsibility to represent everyone fairly and equally. Her choice of not recommending the name "Little Saigon" for the business district should not be a reason for recalling her.

The City of San Jose needs peace and solidarity and now is the time for all of us to voice our opinion and work towards a resolution that will bring back the positive image of the Vietnamese community.

On Tuesday, March 4, 2008, the San Jose City Council will vote on the issue of the naming of the businessdistrict. We encourage our fellow Vietnamese Americans to attend the meeting to voice your opinion and protect the good name of the Vietnamese community. Please come to Lee's Sandwiches, located across from City Hall, at 5:30pm to show your support for one of our own, Madison Nguyen.

Sincerely,

A Group of Young Professionals of Northern California

Gus Colgain, President

Dear Friends,

I have been deeply disturbed to hear a small radical group of Vietnamese dissenters have been attacking Councilmember Madison Nguyen and attempting to gather signatures in order to recall her.  I cannot believe that this group represents any significant number of District 7 residents.

Madison has been a strong and focused member of our City Council.  She has worked tirelessly on behalf of all residents in District 7 and there have been a number of needed improvements that have enriched all of you.  To allow a small number of dissenters to attempt to recall her over the naming of a business district that does not impact the vast majority of District 7 residents is patently ridiculous. You need to stand up and declare yourselves on her side. Let’s put a stop to this nonsense.

CMRAA endorsed Ms. Nguyen for City Council, and we take great pride in standing behind our endorsement and strongly support her actions. Madison Nguyen has my profound respect and support.  The Vietnamese residents of District 7, with the possible exception of a few radical squeaky wheels, have every reason to be proud of her efforts on their behalf.

Please support Madison Nguyen and LOUDLY declare NO should you be approached and asked to sign a recall petition.

Sincerely,

Gus Colgain

CMRAA President

ANTI-RECALL RESOLUTION

Resolution of the Santa Clara County Democratic Party

WHEREAS San Jose City Councilmember Madison Nguyen was elected to the San Jose City Council in September 2005, and re-elected in June 2006, by a clear majority of District 7 voters, having served since her election with honor and integrity, well representing the values of social justice and equal access to government for all citizens long espoused by the Santa Clara County Democratic Party, and never having been accused of any malfeasance or dereliction of the public trust;

WHEREAS City Councilmember Nguyen now faces a possible recall campaign before the expiration of her term in office, the stated reasons for which amount to differences of opinion on a single issue, not malfeasance, and which, if successful, would remove the popularly elected representative from the San Jose City Council;

AND WHEREAS the Santa Clara County Democratic Party is keenly aware of the need to reserve the people’s recall power for true abuses of the public trust, such abuses not being present with respect to City Councilmember Nguyen;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Santa Clara County Democratic Party opposes the recall of City Councilmember Nguyen;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Santa Clara County Democratic Party urges all District 7 voters to assist in the effort to prevent the recall from qualifying and, if qualified, to strongly oppose its passage.

Submitted by Clark Williams for consideration at the January 10th, 2008, meeting of the Santa Clara County Democratic Party Central Committee.

Letter of Support from Robert Sandoval, President of the West Evergreen Neighborhood Association

May 27, 2008Robert Sandoval

Acknowledgement Letter to Councilmember Madison Nguyen

My name is Robert Sandoval. I am the President of the West Evergreen Neighborhood Association, a mixed ethnic, diversified group in the District 7 community, and am a Latino. Why do we as residents support Councilmember Nguyen? There are several reasons.

We in District 7 elected Madison Nguyen because she made promises that she would represent us all equally. She has fulfilled those promises. Since taking office, Councilmember Nguyen has worked tirelessly on behalf of the District 7 residents, holding community meetings, listening to residents’ needs, advocating youth programs, advancing anti-gang efforts, and securing funding and resources for the entire area.

By means of the help from Councilmember Madison Nguyen, many signs have been installed in our neighborhood. With the focus and determined concerns from her council office, “No Parking on Street-Sweeping Days” signs have been installed in many neighborhoods in District 7.

In our district, many of our neighborhoods have been dealing with illegal dumping and littering. Signs have been installed in regards to this issue, and since its inception, these signs have proven very positive for its purpose in achieving clean neighborhoods.

Funding from Councilmember Nguyen’s office brought the completion of the Towers Lane Project, in her first year in office. This project included paved streets and street lighting. This did not exist before in this particular area. During the rainy season, this part of the community was a mud hole. Her office has also provided funding for an additional one acre for the West Evergreen Park, beginning in 2010.

Thanks to funding from Councilmember Nguyen’s office and determined advocacy and support from the City of San Jose and Joint-use agreement with the Evergreen School District, we will improve the playing field at O.B. Whaley School and make it available to the community. Construction on this project starts in June 2008. In addition to her other accomplishments in office, she has assisted very needy families in securing medical health care.

How many more reasons do we need to retain our councilmember in office? Therefore, we, the residents of District 7, commend and recognize the hard work, tireless efforts, and forth-right actions of Councilmember Madison Nguyen in hearing her constituents, representing District 7 residents, securing funding and ensuring follow-through actions.

This recall of our councilwoman is not needed. It will be a waste of city money, money that the City of San Jose can use in fixing some of the potholed streets, hiring more police officers for the safety of our neighborhoods, or beautification projects for the neighborhoods.

Therefore, I ask all of the residents in District 7 to support Madison Nguyen, our councilmember, for our future endeavors.

Sincerely,

Robert Sandoval
President of the West Evergreen
Neighborhood Association

"I have been impressed with Madison since she joined the San Jose City
Council. She is a courageous and principled representative who has
demonstrated strength serving District 7 . Madison has led
effectively on issues such as housing, traffic calming and public
safety . She has served her District and the broader San Jose
community well."

---Councilmember Judy Chirco
